Wrong Spec, Real Cost

Use the quick steps below to dial in your loading dock needs.
Step 1: Match Your Type
Step 2: Calculate Projection
What it is: how far the bumper sticks out from the wall.
Goal: Keep trailers and leveler lip from hitting the building as the trailer “floats” up or down
Rule of thumb
Projection ≈ %grade + 5 in
Quick Guide
| % Driveway Grade | Projection |
| 0% (flat) | 4-5 in |
| 1% | 6 in |
| 2% | 7 – 8 in |
| 3% | 8 – 9 in |
| 4% | 9 – 10 in |
| 5% | 10 -11 in |
| 6+% | 12+ in |

Step 3: Orientation & Face Size
Horizontal Bumper
- Approach is flat or slight grade (0 – 2%)
- Fleet height and/ or wear mark is consistent
- Vertical travel is controlled or negligible during unloading
Common Sizes
- 12″ x 18″ – Everyday standard size
- 10″ x 24″ – When re-spotting is a problem and height isn’t
- 12″ x 36″ – Heavy duty, maximum coverage
Vertical Bumper
- Approach grade is significant (≥ 3%)
- Fleet height varies
- Big vertical travel when unloading
Common Sizes
- 20″ x 11″ – Standard size
- 24″ x 11″ – More coverage for increased grade or travel
- 36″ x 11″ – maximum coverage
Step 4: Installation Style
Learn Which Style Fits Your Dock
Before ordering, take a close look at your loading dock pit construction. The way your pit is built determines which bumper installation style will work best. Use the guide below to match your dock pit with the correct option.
Steel Curb and Concrete Walls
If your dock pit has a single steel curb/angle to weld to with concrete surrounding it, you’ll want a bumper that can fasten securely to both materials.
- P1 (One Welded Side, One Bolted Side): Weld to the curb for strength and bolt into the concrete wall for stability.
- Standard (Two Bolted Sides): Bolt directly into the concrete if welding isn’t required.

Full Steel Face Plate
If your dock pit is built with a sheet of steel covering the entire face (no exposed concrete to bolt into), welding is the only secure installation method.
- P2 (Two Welded Sides): Both sides of the bumper weld directly to the steel plate, ensuring a solid and long-lasting hold.

Other Dock Pit Types
Not all loading docks are the same. If your pit doesn’t look like the examples above, don’t worry — we can help.
