Definition

Knurled plate, commonly called diamond plate or checker plate, is steel with a raised, repeating pattern rolled into its surface to improve traction. At industrial facilities, it’s most often used as the deck surface of dock levelers, dock plates, ramps, and platforms, wherever forklifts and foot traffic cross a transition point.

What Does Knurled Plate Mean?

“Diamond plate” specifically refers to the diamond-shaped raised pattern, while “knurled” can describe other raised patterns too, but the terms are used interchangeably across the industry. Either way, the goal is the same: give a hard steel surface enough texture to stay grippy under a forklift tire or a boot sole.

The leveler deck is one of the highest-friction-demand surfaces in a facility. Wet weather, oil, and constant forklift wheel contact all reduce grip on a smooth surface, right at the point where a dropped load or a slipping wheel is most costly.
